The Summer's Journey....

We are back!!

Admittedly our blogging and updating has been slow, but this is soon to change! We have all made it back to our respective states after an interesting and rather busy summer. Two marriages, a New Hampshire and Vermont mini-tour, two weeks of music camp and many meetings later- we are ready to begin our 2009/2010 season!

TABOR Summer - Part 1

During the month of July we had the pleasure of returning to the Upper Valley area of New Hampshire for a series of concerts and workshops.

We performed at the beautiful St. Gaudens Historic Site, one of our favorite venues. Sculptor and artist Augustus St. Gaudens lived and worked here....a truly inspiring location for our first performance in UV.

For our next event we were off to Norwich, VT (yes, the home of King Arthur Flour!) where we offered a workshop for instrumentalists and ensembles at St. Barnabas Church.

It was great time with a really wonderful collection of musicians of all levels. The main theme of the day seemed to be intonation and ensemble communication. The workshop ended up culminating in an admirable sight-reading session with all of the participants and an enthusiastic discussion of how to have more fun during performances.

That evening was followed by an orchestra play-in coordinated by our dear friend and conductor Bob Mark. And of course, we can't forget the delicious potluck meal we shared before getting to work. The orchestra did a fantastic job with Haydn's Clock Symphony and we look forward to more of these events very soon!

Until then, TABOR eagerly awaits our return to the Upper Valley.......

Waves, The Stone, and an Electro-Acoustic Odyssey

Just when you thought TABOR was uncomfortably quiet, we spring from the darkness yet again......

This time to collaborate with a good west coast friend, William Susman at The Stone, NYC on March 17th, 8:00pm.
Don't miss TABOR perform acoustic piece 6 Minutes and 30 Seconds and electro-acoustic work Waves. If you missed out on our first performance of Waves, we strongly suggest you make it up to yourselves by coming this time! And if you have heard it already, then you know it is never the same twice.

Inspired by Homer's Odyssey, Waves will lure you in with sweet undulations of old school soundtrack and improvisatory madness plucked from the brains of not only TABOR, but of mutli-instrumentalist Demetrius Spaneas and William Susman himself. Other works of William Susman will be performed including live music to Tribeca Film Festival Best Documentary Short “Native New Yorker”.

We are really looking forward to jamming at The Stone......and yes an ensemble of our nature can jam!

So how did we meet up with our good friend Bill, you ask? Myspace of course! In fact, I can't remember exactly how it started.....a message here, a message there, a score sent and performances followed. Despite the extreme pressure of having the title the intended duration of the piece, we have managed to perform it at 6 Minutes and 29 Seconds. Not too shabby.
When Bill heard we were venturing into more electronic works, he sent us Waves, which is a fresh exploration each time we get on the stage to perform it. Many rehearsals in darkened rooms later, we present to you an unpredictable journey into reverberating caverns, siren seductions, and electronic gargling bliss. See you on the other side....

TABOR and a Film

Well, it's 2009 and the Tabor 5 have hit the ground running. Yes, we're running right to the Cornelia Street Cafe on January 26 at 8pm to play a crazy piece by composer Meg Schedel. What's even better than seeing the five beautiful members of Tabor on a concert stage? Seeing the five beautiful members of Tabor AND a crazy cool video at the same time!!! Yes, folks, we're doing the old-school idea of accompanying a silent film in a totally new-school improv sort of way. Sure to be a blast!!!

"Nine musicians will join composer/cellist/computer musician Margaret Schedel on stage for an exploration of at least two aspects of her ferociously interactive work. TABOR will perform multi-media work Azharah , a composition for woodwinds and film. "

Here it is taborites, dearly beloved friends, and fans......our very own blog!

This is where we will keep you updated about all the news and happenings in the world of TABOR. Goody. To start with, we will proceed to dive into another realm never before explored by the likes of WW5's. Sick of Neilsen, Ligeti, Francaix? .....yep us too. Just you wait to see some of our next projects.

Giddy? Salivating? Even a little dribble? OK. So Quintet rarely has that effect on most, and perhaps has not been the coolest of the ensembles but TABOR plans to do the best they can to alter the face of this combo. How will we do this? Well.....how should we know exactly? We are keeping our little eyes and hearts open.....

Little hints of the future for you:
This January we will be working with composer/cellist Meg Schedel and performing her work for quintet and film. (Check out our next blog or details.)
TABOR is also now in the beginning stages of an exciting collaboration with composer Mikael Karlsson and engineer/robot builder Christopher Macdonald. Let's just say it involves lasers and a little box! Stay tuned.
